IT business partner, Pharma division and as member of the Bayer IT leadership board
Abel joined Bayer on May 2017 as IT business partner, Pharma division and as member of the Bayer IT
leadership board. Before joining Bayer, Abel was head of IT for Novartis Technical Operations looking
after manufacturing, supply chain and quality as well as Global CIO for the Sandoz Division (since 2012),
a role which he helped integrate into Novartis Business Services. He originally joined the Novartis IT
Leadership Board in 2010.
He brings to Bayer a passion for patient-centricity, and the strong belief that IT is central to the digital
transformation underway in the Pharmaceutical industry to allow a richer interaction with patients and
health-care providers. His role at Bayer will be key to enable business models that increasingly leverage
Information Technology for drug discovery, digital supply chain and commercial activities.
Before joining Novartis, he was CIO Europe-Asia for Cemex, a $20Bn global construction materials firm
where he led major post-merger integrations from Madrid, Spain. Prior positions at Dell (General
Manager, Mexico, and Supply Chain, Latin America) and Boston Consulting Group (Principal, Monterrey
and Dallas offices) shaped a multi-disciplinary, business-first perspective of the CIO role.
He holds an electronics engineering degree from Tec de Monterrey, Mexico, and an MBA from Stanford
Abel is married and has two teenage boys and enjoys sports like competitive rowing and swimming, and
loves the outdoors.
